Portuguese giants FC Porto were up against French side Lille in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League play-off match, with the winners sealing their place in the group stage for the upcoming 2014-15 campaign. Despite many of their key players being sold, including defender Eliaquim Mangala and defensive midfielder Fernando to the Premier League champions Manchester City, Porto took a 1-0 lead with them courtesy of Mexican midfielder Hector Herrera into the second leg of their UCL tie which was vital to give themselves an advantage (albeit a slim one) going into tonight's match.

They had a few new signings on-show for themselves, including the likes of Dutch centre-back Bruno Martins Indi and loan midfield signing Casemiro from Real Madrid.

From the first whistle, the hosts dominated in terms of the half-chances. Colombian striker Jackson Martinez was heavily involved in play within the first few minutes, and was unlucky not to get himself on the scoresheet in the early going, as he narrowly missed a few chances as Lille scampered clear.

It was clear to see on paper that Porto had the stronger side going into the match, and Lille's only real catalyst on the pitch struggled to get the ball - Belgian young forward Divock Origi, who impressed many with his goal-scoring form and attacking flair at the World Cup. The only reason he was even playing during the match was because he was loaned out to former cllub Lille after Liverpool completed a £10million pound move for him earlier on in the summer.

And despite a few half-chances for both sides, the score stayed a 0-0 draw in the first period as the whistle blew for the 15-minute interval. Martinez and Neves both missed chances for the hosts, while centre-back Diego Reyes replaced Alex Sandro as he picked up a knock towards the end of the first 45.

However, Porto were the team who broke the deadlock with a well-struck costless-kick from 25 yards out, thanks to midfielder Yacine Brahimi who curled a set-piece into the bottom corner of the net.

Lille were unable to get back into the game, and caused their own downfall when they lost the ball and Jackson Martinez latched onto a through pass from midfielder Brahimi to slot past Nigerian goalkeeper Enyeama and make it 3-0 on aggregate.

After Martinez's finish, it seemed to be game over for the French side having not made any real clear-cut chances and struggled to test goalkeeper Fabiano.

They had virtually sealed their fate, and after the whistle blew for full-time it had been confirmed that Lille would be playing their football in the UEFA Europa League for the new season.
