The United States men's national team will begin preparations for the 2016 Copa America Centenario and 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Qualifying as they travel to Prague for a friendly against the Czech Republic. This is the first match for the Americans since their trip to the Round of 16 in Brazil. The Czechs enter this game having not played an international game since June, when they lost to Austria 2-1 in a pre-World Cup friendly.

For the United States, this is their one and only match on this international break. They will play two more matches in 2014, both in October. On October 10, they will host Ecuador in a swansong for legendary striker Landon Donovan. He has announced his intention to retire at the end of the current MLS season, and US Soccer have said that they will call him in for one last cap.

Meanwhile, the Czechs will kick off their qualification campaign for Euro 2016 less than a week later when they host the Netherlands. Under the new qualifying rules for the Euros, the top two teams in each group qualify straight through to the finals while the third place finisher enters the playoffs. Czech Republic have been drawn in Group A alongside the Netherlands, Turkey, Latvia, Iceland and Kazakhstan. It is not an easy group, but the Czechs, Dutch, Turks, and Icelanders will all harbor hopes of a place at France 2016.

Both sides have called in a few players with little experience, although the Czechs have named far fewer. Czech Republic manager Dusan Fitzel has called in five players with five caps or less, although two are goalkeepers. Meanwhile, United States manager Jurgen Klinsmann has named 15 players 24 or under, 11 with ten caps or less and six uncapped players. Klinsmann has made a statement of intent that he is willing to look at the young talent at his disposal before the start of the next qualifying cycle.
