Abiola Dauda scored a crucial hat-trick as Vitesse won their first Eredivise match in six months with a 3-1 victory over newly-promoted Excelsior at the Gelredome.

Dauda, the £500,000 summer signing from Red Star Belgrade, was handed his first start of the season by Peter Bosz, as pressure began to mount on the club, but the Nigerian striker did not disappoint, scoring three to sink the Eredivisie new boys.

It took 41 minutes for Dauda to break the deadlock, when he sent a crashing header towards goal from a Zakaria Labyad corner and despite Alessandro Damen getting a hand to it in the Excelsior goal, the header was too powerful.

Just after the hour, he grabbed his second when he shot from the middle of the penalty area through Damen's legs.

He completed his hat-trick when Labyad swung in another corner, for Dauda to scramble over the line and more or less seal the first win of the season for the hosts.

The visitors snatched their consolation with a late penalty as Wallace, on loan from Chelsea, fouled an Excelsior attacker and Jeff Stans sent Piet Velthuizen the wrong way with the resulting penalty.

The win was Vitesse's first of the season and after their dreadful start, lifted them one place to 17th. Peter Bosz's side will have to begin to replicate this form and soon, or owner Aleksandr Tsjigirinski could very quickly lose patience with the struggling manager.
