Guus Hiddink's Netherlands side were punished for their sloppy defending, with two goals from Swansea midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson as Oranje fell to their second defeat in three games. It is a result that leaves them six points behind joint-group leaders Iceland and Czech Republic.

The Netherlands never looked like scoring, despite enjoying almost 80% possession in the second-half. The Icelandic defence kept Dutch talisman Arjen Robben fairly well contained, and the Bayern Munich winger was restricted to long shots.

Iceland started the game well and had a penalty in less than 10 minutes, when Gregory van der Wiel brought down Birkir Bjarnason needlessly just inside the box. Sigurdsson made no mistake in dispatching the resulting penalty.

The Swansea man shocked Europe when he scored again just before half-time, as an Iceland corner wasn't cleared properly by the Netherlands' comical defence, and Sigurdsson was on hand to volley into the top corner from close.

Robin van Persie and Robben spurned multiple chances in the second half, despite having so much possession. The closest chance to another goal came through Iceland however, as Daley Blind's awful night was summed up when he was found out of position. Sigurdsson played a through ball to Kolbeinn Sigthorsson on the right and the winger then put in a teasing cross for Bjarnason. Sadly for Iceland fans, he just couldn't quite get a touch on it.

Guus Hiddink was not a happy man after the game, telling the Dutch media, "I am not angry, I am just deeply disappointed."

The loss was the Netherlands' first ever defeat to Iceland, who seem to be a nation on the way up after they made it to the World Cup play-offs, only to be undone by Croatia.
