A brace from Dutch wonderkid Memphis Depay and further goals from Jurgen Locadia, Santiago Arias and Florian Jozefzoon condemned the Eagles to an embarrassing defeat and put the league leaders on 43 points at the halfway stage, four clear of reigning champions Ajax.

The hosts had opportunities to put the game out of sight within the first 10 minutes, such was their dominance. The breakthrough came after just 14 minutes when Arias broke away, beating the offside trap, and finished off the post.

The only threat GA Eagles posed all game was when Lars Lamboojj's header struck the crossbar, though their momentum didn't last, as Depay doubled his side's lead on 32 minutes, with a fantastic looping header, from Jeffrey Bruma's long ball.

With 10 minutes to go, it remained 2-0, though a late flurry of three goals really served to rub the visitors' faces in the mud.

Depay got his second of the day, sliding home after a fantastic counter-attack from Phillip Cocu's side, while Locadia capitalised on a defensive error to make it four, before Jozefzoon finished off a nice passing move to cap off a wonderful day for the hosts.

The result sees PSV finish 2014 four points clear at the top, while Go Ahead Eagles stay 16th, dangling dangerously close to the relegation zone.

I’m very pleased with my team’s performance. We put on a fine team display, although this was our third league game in ten days”, said Cocu, analysing PSV´s final game before the winter break. “We started the game in aggressive fashion and had a tremendous spirit to win the game. The opening goal actually sums it all up. Our right back was in the penalty area to break the deadlock”, said Cocu, who was happy with the role the substitutes played. “ I’ve said it before that we win as a team and need to stay together, including the substitutes. It proved to be true once again tonight, when we ended a hectic week with three home fixtures in style”.

Eventually we suffered an embarrassing defeat, when PSV scored two more goals in the closing stages”, said Go Ahead head coach Foeke Booy. “We put on a reasonably decent display for eighty minutes. We were well organised and gave little away. I think Arias was in an offside position when the scored the opening goal and we clumsily conceded a second goal. I told the players at half-time that we should press forward after the break. That’s what we did but there was no clinical finishing up front. And when we found ourselves 3-0 down, we were hanging in the ropes and conceded two more goals, which makes defeat even more embarrassing”, concluded Booy.
