A Danilo penalty 12 minutes from time cancelled out Derlis Gonzalez's early opening goal to give Porto a crucial away goal against Basel. The Portugese side were the better side for the majority of the match and will fancy their chances of progressing to the next round.

Basel took an early lead, against the run of play, after just 11 minutes. A superb pass from Fabian Frei found it's way into the path of Derlis Gonzalez, who shrugged off two men to stab the ball past Fabiano in the Porto goal. Gonzalez did seem to be injured as he scored the goal, clashing with Fabiano and he was forced off with what seemed like a head injury just 10 minutes later.

Porto did have a strong claim for a penalty on the half hour mark as striker Jackson Martinez appeared to be hauled down the ground by centre back Walter Samuel, however Mark Clattenburg signalled play on.

The rest of the half didn't pass without controversy, with four yellow cards being handed out before a small flare up in stoppage time between Marko Streller and members of the Porto defence.

Just minutes after the restart, Porto thought they had equalised as Casimero flicked home a rebound from a headed attempt. Whilst the players were celebrating and getting ready for kickoff, Clattenburg spoke to his officals and eventually signalled for no goal. Replays showed it was the correct decision, as two Porto players were in offside positions impeding upon the Basel goalkeeper when the original header was made.

After the confusing scene, the late tackles continued and so did the cards, with the amount of yellows rising to eight on 62 minutes when Suchy was booked. Martinez came close to levelling for Porto as he found room in the box, only to see his right footed chip land on the top of the net.

Porto continued to pile on the pressure as they had done all evening and finally got the goal they deserved when Danilo scored a penalty in the 79th minute. Walter Samuel had handled a low cross thrust into the box, and was lucky to avoid a second yellow. The Brazilian took a short run up and lashed home the penalty with vigour and ease.

The game slowly petered out after the goal, with Porto seeming content to take a score draw back to Portugal whilst Basel seemed too tired to produce a winner after their strenuous attempts to keep hold of the lead earlier on. The two sides will go head to head once again in a few weeks, with Porto favourites to progress to the quarter finals.
