Zenit are one step closer to qualifying for the last 16 of the Europa League after a 1-0 win away in Eindhoven against the current Eredivisie leaders PSV.

The first chance of the game came in the 12th minute when Wijnaldum’s corner found the head of Isimat-Mirin inside the penalty box but the centre back’s good header was brilliantly saved by Lodigin who managed to tip the ball onto the bar and out for a second corner which was cleared away by Neto. Jetro Willems found himself laying in the middle of the park during a PSV attack and the promising left-back’ shot fizzled wide of the post in the 15th minute.

Willems again had a chance to give PSV the advantage when Guardado played in a beautiful pass to the defender into the penalty box but his first touch disowned him and rolled past the post and out for a goal kick. Zenit had their first attempt on target in the 20th minute when Shatov fired one from distance but Zoet did well to claim the shot. Zoet was called into action again moments later when Danny crossed the ball into Rondon who was free inside the penalty box but his header was well saved again by Zoet.

PSV had a golden opportunity to open the scoring when Depay was played through on goal with Wijnaldum sprinting to the side of him, but Depay’s pass across goal to the captain was intercepted by Garay and the danger was cleared by the Argentina defender.

Depay could had made it 1-0 to the hosts in the opening minute of the second half when the left winger burst through down the left wing and cut into the box but his goal bound shot was cleared by Neto and out for a corner.

However in the 63rd minute it was Zenit who would take the lead in Eindhoven. Danny burst down the left wing and played the ball across to Hulk who tucked the ball into the top right hand corner of the net to give Zenit the lead and the important way goal. Rondon could have doubled Zenit’s lead when Zoet again saved his volley from close range in the 73rd minute.

The game finished with Zenit’s manager Andres Villas Boas was sent to the stand in the 90th minute for arguing with the 4th official.
