FC Porto caused a shock on Wednesday night as they beat German side Bayern Munich in the first leg of the quarter-finals in the UEFA Champions League.

A brace in the opening 10 minutes from Ricardo Quaresma including a penalty was enough to see off a depleted Bayern Munich. Thiago Alcantara bagged an away goal for the Bundesliga side before Jackson Martinez put the first leg beyond doubt.

“We’re to be congratulated for the great game and great win,” said Quaresma. “Nothing is won. Now let’s think about the next game versus Académica.”

"It's certainly a setback, but you have to overcome adversity if you want to become a great team," - Matthias Sammer

FC Porto has won the Champions League on two occasions, most recently in 2004 after Jose Mourinho’s Porto beat AS Monaco 3-0.

Bayern Munich captain, Philipp Lahm told reporters: “We always want to build from the back and this style can be dangerous. There’s still everything to play for [in the second leg].

“In the second leg we have to play our game. We must have plenty of possession, create chances and convert them. We got the away goal so it is definitely possible.”

The German side last won the competition during the 2012/13 season for a fifth time, beating German side Borussia Dortmund with a late Arjen Robben goal – who missed the first leg against Porto.

The second leg of the tie takes place at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday, April 21.
