Bayern Munich triumphed 3-2 on the night but were unable to comeback from their devastating first leg loss, as Barcelona won 5-3 on aggregate to reach their first UEFA Champions League final in four years.

Bayern looked like mounting a comeback when Mehdi Benatia put them ahead early on, however those ideas were quickly put to rest thanks to a first-half brace by Neymar. Goals from Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller in the second period did help the hosts to a match victory, but they couldn't turn things aroud overall and exited at the semi-final stage for the second year running.

Barcelona didn't waste their time in looking to further their advantage in the tie, as creative midfielder Ivan Rakitic raced on to Daniel Alves' through ball inside the box, forcing Manuel Neuer into an early save.

Despite this, it was the home side who took an early lead through Mehdi Benatia's header. Robert Lewandowski did well to win a corner at the byline, which Xabi Alonso ran over to take. The Spaniard's ball in was good, and the Moroccan defender Benatia espcaped from his marker to head into the corner of the net.

Bayern took confidence from their goal and began to look like they were going to get back into the tie, as Lewandowski almost got free in the area, minutes before Bastian Schweinstiger sent a 30 yard shot crashing wide.

However, any hopes of them pulling off a shock comeback were diminished when Neymar equalised after 16 minutes. A delightful pass from the first-leg hero Lionel Messi put Luis Suárez through on goal, and the number seven unselfishly rolled the ball across to Neymar who tapped it into an empty net.

The game didn't slow after that though, with end-to-end attacking continuing the great specatacle. Messi tested Neuer with a toe-poke at goal, before Marc Andre ter Stegen made a fantastic save from Thomas Muller's goalbound header.

The action didn't stop there, and there was another goal soon after as Neymar scored his second of the night to make it 2-1. Once again Messi and Suárez were the creators, as the Argentinian flicked a long ball to send the former Liverpool forward through, with the Uruguayan once again clipping the ball across goal to Neymar. The forward still had work to do, but took the ball down calmly and beat Neuer at his near post with a fierce low strike.

The home side were then in the knowledge that they needed to score five goals to progress, and set about that task with effort still high under the watchful eye of Pep Guardiola. They should have clawed another one back when Lewandowsi saw the ball bounce kindly to him in the area, however ter Stegen made a brilliant save from the Poles' shot, before clawing the ball off the line.

Half-time saw one substitution, as Pedro replaced Suárez for Barcelona due to the striker reportedly feeling some tightness in his hamstring. This could be attributed as the reason for the second 45 starting at a much slower rate than the first had, with Juan Bernat and Muller's long range efforts the closest we came to seeing a goal until the 58th minute, when Lewandowski pulled the score back to 2-2.

Some superb play on the edge of the area from the striker saw one drop of the shoulder dumbfound the Barca defence, before he swept a curling effort into the corner, finally beating ter Stegen.

Luis Enrique was clearly keen to make sure Bayern couldn't make any sort of comeback as he made the conservative substitution of swapping midfielder Rakitic for defender Jeremy Mathieu. However, it didn't have the intended effect as Bayern went ahead on the night just a few minutes later thanks to Muller. After a good Bayern attack had seemingly broken down, Schweinstiger teed up Muller perfectly on the edge of the box and the German did the rest, whipping the ball into the bottom right hand corner.

The home side were now back in the position of needing three late goals to progress, and it looked like if they were to get them Lewandowski would again be the man as he was the focal point of every attack. However, despite many late efforts on goal from the striker, it just wasn't to be as Barcelona's commanding first leg performance ensured they were never in too much trouble on the night.

For now, Bayern's season is effectively over as they have already won the Bundesliga, whilst Barcelona will watch on tomorrow night as Juventus and Real Madrid meet back in Spain to decide who the other finalist will be.
