Goals from Blaise Matuidi and Ezequiel Lavezzi ensure that Laurent Blanc's men clinched their third successive Ligue 1 title, with a match to spare at the end of what has been a rather turbulent season for the Parisiens, having been knocked out of the UEFA Champions League at the quarter-final stage by La Liga giants Barcelona as well as struggling with consistency in the league itself this campaign.

A narrow but sufficient 2-1 victory over Montpellier away from home on Saturday evening made sure the European powerhouses finally saw off title challengers Lyon in the fiercely contested battle for this year's crown as French champions. PSG started the season as hot favourites to run rampant with the league title, which is hardly a surprise given the abundance of talent in their ranks as well as the riches to splash money on world-class players. However, they lacked consistency for the majority of the domestic campaign, recording lacklustre draws and losses to lesser opposition in games they should have easily won in truth.

Marseille and Lyon were the pace-setters of the league in terms of points recorded, as well as impressive wins throughout the early going of the campaign, but the sheer firepower of PSG have eventually proven too strong for their rivals, such has been the case for the past few years. Saturday's win sealed PSG's fifth league win, but they'll be hoping they can contest with the big boys in Europe's elite for years to come as they look to compete with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich every year in the "business end" of the Champions League - especially as Ligue 1 is seen as inferior to the rest of Europe's top leagues such as La Liga, Bundesliga and the Premier League.
