Even though Belgium have one of the deepest squads in Europe and are expected to cruise their way into the European Championship Qualifiers, they may have to play a pivotal match this Friday without one of their key players.

Looking ahead to the game against Wales - to be held at Cardiff - coach Marc Wilmots is almost certain he won't be able to use midfielder Marouane Fellaini as the Manchester United midfield enforcer has been out of training in recent days due to a groin injury.

Fellaini was vital in the team's last game as he scored a brace to overwhelm France in a surprise 4-3 victory. The former Everton star is one of the most experienced players in the roster - one that includes stars like Chelsea pair Eden Hazard and Thibaut Courtois and Wolfsburg's Bundesliga Player of the Year Kevin de Bruyne - and his absence might be greatly felt as the squad doesn't have another player with his combination of skills.

46-year-old Wilmots, however, doesn't appear to be overly worried about Fellaini's likely absence.

"If he cannot participate then we have alternatives", Wilmots said. While the coach is adamant that the Red Devils "have to be at our best" and admits that "Fellaini is important", he is confident that "we have enough depth to replace him."

Celtic defender Jason Denayer has also been forced to sit out training this week and Manchester City star Vincent Kompany is suspended so there are plenty of defensive situations Wilmots needs to solve before what will surely be a crucially important game against Gareth Bale, Aaron Ramsey and company.

Chris Coleman's Wales are currently sitting in second place in qualifying Group B with 11 points. They have the same points tally as Belgium but with a considerably inferior goal difference.
