Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen have been crowned champions of the debut Audi Quattro Cup. They competed alongside Southampton, Valencia, and the tournament's hosts Red Bull Salzburg at the Red Bull Stadium with the German club coming out on top in Austria.

Bremen opened the tournament in style with a 4-0 victory over the hosts, they took the lead 15 minutes when Philipp Bargfrede was put through on goal and the midfielder, who is not partiularly known for his goal scoring prowess cooly slotted into the bottom corner.

Two minutes later they doubled their lead in spectacular fashion, a ball from the byline found new signing Anthony Ujah who showed spectacular skill to backheel it into the net. It was game over in the 27th minute when Santiago Garcia, the Argentine attempted a pass which was blocked but he was given a second opportunity when it bounced back to him and he hit a thunderous bending shot into the side of the net.

Franco di Santo then rounded off the rout to secure Bremen’s passage into the final with a fourth. Southampton and Valencia were up next, which was not exactly the thrilling encounter that had followed previously. Southampton came very close 20 minutes in when both Sadio Mané and Jose Fonte hit the crossbar from a set-piece swung into the box. They will have no doubt regretted squandering their opportunities to go in-front, when Pablo Piatti broke the deadlock late on to send the La Liga side into the final.

Southampton's pre-season had already gotten off to a sour start, having suffered two defeats throughout their time in Austria including their previous game. To add insult to injury, it only got worse for Ronald Koeman's side when they came up against the hosts Salzburg in the third-place play-off.

Salzburg pretty much dominated the Saints for the 45 minutes they played and they found themselves behind 19 minutes in, a thunderous shot was well parried by new signing - former Fulham goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg, but it only went as far as Havard Nielsen who looped an excellent diving header back over the Dutch 'keeper and into the net.

The Austrian side added a second only four minutes later which secured third position for Salzburg, a brilliant through ball was latched upon by the 17-year-old who sliced an excellent volley into the corner to round off a disappointing beginning to Southampton’s pre-season tour in Europe.

All eyes were now on Bremen and Valencia who battled it out for the Audi Quattro title in the torrential rain. It was a match that lacked chances, but Bremen were handed a disadvantage 18 minutes before the end when they were reduced to ten men when Felix Kroos was handed two successive yellow cards.

Valencia failed to take advantage of their extra man and the game had to be decided by penalties, both sides showed great composure in the shootout until Valencia’s  Salvador Ruiz stepped up for his set piece which was brilliantly saved by Felix Wiedwald to claim the victory and the trophy for Bremen in the end.
