That's all for tonight! I've been Ameé Ruszkai and thank you for joining us here at VAVEL to follow the match. Stay tuned for the report to follow! Good night.

The other game in the group tonight saw Finland travel to Greece to record a 1-0 victory.

Edmundsson was dismissed just after the hour, and the visitors took advantage to climb to the top of the Group F table, with Romania and Hungary producing a goalless draw between them tonight.

Lafferty grabs a customary goal to take his tally in qualifying to six from seven games, but it's McAuley who steals the show with a brace from defence.

Full time! 3-1 to Northern Ireland is the final score in the Faroe Islands.

93 - McNair with a decent strike from distance, but it's over the bar.

91 - Hansson takes the set piece, but fires it high and wide as the game comes to a close with Northern Ireland comfortably seeing things out against 10 men.

90 - Three minutes added. The Faroes have a free-kick in a decent shooting position now. Central from 30 yards.

87 - Long throw-ins haven't been all that effective for the hosts tonight. Another one cleared by Northern Ireland now whilst Benjaminsen is replaced by Baldvinsson for the Faroes.

85 - Magennis forces a good save out of Nielsen down to his right. Evans' cross from the resulting corner runs out for a goal kick.

84 - Hendrikkssen Olsen off for Bartalsstovu for the Faroes, whilst Ferguson replaces Brunt for Northern Ireland.

78 - Defensive change for Northern Ireland now, as McNair comes on for Lafferty.

76 - After that, the Faroes made a sub, with Justinussen replacing Holst.

Lafferty with this one - the scruffiest of the goals tonight. Magennis squeezes his cross in and Nattestad's poor defending is punished by the persistence of Lafferty, who eventually fires home from close range after some scrapping at the near post.

75 - 3-1! Northern Ireland seal the win!

74 - McGinn's cross is too deep and Davis cannot recycle the loose ball as the Faroes regain possession.

72 - Magennis booked now as the game starts to get a bit fiery. Didn't look to be anything in it, but the referee thought otherwise.

Free-kick in from the right is the source, and it's another stooped header from the defender to give his side the lead once more!

71 - GOAL! 2-1 to Northern Ireland! McAuley!

70 - Hansson booked now for something he's said to the referee.

69 - Positive change by the visitors, who take off right-back McLaughlin to introduce striker Josh Magennis.

68 - Decent chance for Northern Ireland then. Davis manages to beat the offside trap and is through on goal, but he hesitates and instead squares to Norwood, whose effort is right at Nielsen.

Could see a momentum shift now. The goal-scorer is off and the Faroes are down to 10 with 25 minutes to go.

Red card! Edmundsson is off for the Faroes! Receives his second yellow card of the evening for a wreckless and extremely late tackle on Norwood.

62 - Nattestad rises to meet the delivery, but gives a foul away in the process.

61 - Fantastic tackle from Norwood, but the referee deems it a foul, despite the Faroes' not appealing. Promising position too. Hendrikksson Olsen over it.

60 - Great cross from McGinn finds Lafferty at the back post, but his attempted volley is blocked by Næs.

59 - Nielsen AGAIN with the good hands to collect. Very commanding performance from the stopper thus far in.

58 - Hansson drags Dallas to the ground, and the resulting free-kick gives Northern Ireland a corner.

57 - Norwood finds space to shoot, but he takes an extra touch which makes the angle tougher and drags it wide.

55 - The Faroes go down the other end to try and establish a lead, but an optimistic overhead kick is mistimed and the attack comes to nothing.

54 - Lafferty applies pressure high up the but, despite blocking a clearance, the goalkeeper collects to save his defender's blushes.

52 - Good build up by the Faroes results in Holst's cross being cleared by Northern Ireland.

47 - Early effort from Dallas, which isn't too far off target from the edge of the box.

Second half is underway!

Northern Ireland have had the chances to put them comfortably in the lead, but the Faroes deserved their goal, marking a very positive spell for them with an equaliser.

Half time. One minute of stoppage time produces nothing, with the scores tied at 1-1.

45 - Golden chance for Lafferty! Brilliant cross in from the right, and the striker beats the offside trap but heads well over the bar. Just needed to get a slight touch on it!

41 - Nielsen again able to collect a cross into the area. Brunt's service has been poor thus far in truth, whilst his couple of decisions to strike from distance have proven extremely wasteful.

40 - Chance for the visitors to go one better from a corner, but pinball in the area comes to nothing.

38 - Northern Ireland need to be careful now. The Faroes are dominating and the fans are getting behind them fantastically. Will be happy to go in at half time with the score 1-1.

Dallas is hesistant with the ball and gives it away in his own box, allowing Nattestad to square for Edmundsson, whose finish is brilliant.

GOAL! 1-1! Equaliser for the Faroes!

36 - Good pressure from the Faroes again, but Northern Ireland are defending well, putting in good blocks and not being over-zealous.

33 - Cross in for Lafferty is headed over the bar. He needed to just glance that one goalwards, having made a run to the near post, but got too much on the effort.

32 - Sloppy again from the away side as McAuley slices a clearance out for a corner.

31 - It goes short to McGinn, whose cross is cleared. The visitors try to recycle the loose ball, but it's sloppily passed out of play.

30 - After being pinned in their own box to defend a few crosses, Northern Ireland now have a free-kick in a good position.

28 - Northern Ireland get forward but Brunt again fires over with another wild attempt.

26 - Good spell this from the Faroes, who have settled well in the last five minutes. Hendriksson Olsen looking for his teammate on the right, but Brunt is alert to the danger to intercept and clear.

24 - Strike from distance from Edmundsson is straight at McGovern who comfortably holds.

23 - Ball is launched into the box by the hosts, but McLaughlin is fouled in the air and Northern Ireland get a free-kick in their own box.

22 - This one is wasted and the Faroes try to break, but McLaughlin concedes a tactical foul to stop the counter, albeit at the cost of a yellow card.

21 - Nattestad with a crucial tackle in the box to concede a corner that McGinn fires just wide from close range. Another corner now.

18 - Baird with the searching ball for McGinn, but Sørensen heads for a corner. Set piece is collected again by Nielsen, who has dealt well with incoming crosses fo far in the game.

Great run by the defender who crouches to head the ball back across the face of goal and into the top corner! 1-0 to the visitors!

13 - GOAL! Another free-kick in a good position to cross for Northern Ireland. Norwood delivers and McAuley heads home!

11 - Great ball across the face of goal can't be diverted towards the net by any of the visitors' attackers, before Brunt plays a wasteful pass to give away possession in the final third.

6 - First yellow card of the night goes to Edmundsson, who slides in wrecklessly and gives Northern Ireland a free-kick in a good position. However, it's claimed by Nielsen in the home goal.

5 - Brunt's teasing cross is poorly cleared by Næs, but Lafferty slips as he tries to capitalise on the defensive error.

2 - Norwood's cross is cleared only as far as Brunt, whose effort from range is half-volleyed wildly over the bar.

We have kick-off!

The teams are out singing the national anthems now. Less than five minutes until kick-off!

Northern Ireland XI: McGovern, C. McLaughlin, McAuley, J. Evans, Baird, S. Davis, Brunt, Dallas, Norwood. McGinn, K. Lafferty.

Faroe Islands XI: Nielsen, Nattestad, O. Faerø, Naes, Hansson, Benjaminsen, Henriksen, Sørensen, S. Vatnhamar, Holst, Edmundsson.

The line-ups are out!

Predicted Northern Ireland XI: (4-1-4-1) McGovern; McLaughlin, McAuley, Evans, Brunt; Baird; Dallas, Davis, Norwood, McGinn; Lafferty.

Predicted Faroe Islands XI: (4-1-4-1) Nielsen; Næs, Færø, Nattestad, Sørensen; Benjaminsen; Vatnhamar, Hansson, Hendriksson Olsen, Justinussen; Holst.

The visitors, however, are expected to make just the one tweak to their team, this being a forced one too due to the fitness of Ward. Aberdeen's Niall McGinn, consequently, is set to start out wide instead.

Jónas Þór Næs is expected to replace Hansen, whilst Odmar Færø fills in for Gregersen, and Gilli Sørensen will keep his place on the left of that back line due to Davidsen's absence. There is expected to be one change going forward as well, with Finnur Justinussen replacing Jóan Símun Edmundsson in midfield.

The Faroes, as aforementioned, are without Gregersen and Davidsen for the match, with the former having started for them last time out. Bárður Hansen is also not in the squad, who played at right-back against Greece.

Of course, with there being changes from the squads that played the last fixtures, as well as a number of injuries and suspensions affecting both manager's selections, there will be alterations to the starting line-ups from each team's last game. However, both will be expected to stick with their 4-1-4-1 set-ups, which will make for an intriguing clash.

Northern Ireland, on the other hand, could not muster up anything more than a goalless draw when they welcomed Romania to Belfast, with them the better performers but unable to make that count. O'Neill will be hoping they can show more conviction tonight in the final third as they continue their realistic bid to make it to their first major tournament since 1986.

The hosts come into this game off the back of a victory in the last round of qualifying matches, albeit this being all the way back in June. Still, that last time out, the Faroes were 2-1 victors at home to Greece, who reached the last 16 at last year's World Cup. The goals came from Hallur Hansson and Hendriksson Olsen, ensuring that Sokratis Papastathopoulos' late strike did not prevent them from taking all three points.

A victory tonight will be necessary to keep them in the hunt to achieve this great feat because, as of now, they sit five points behind third placed Hungary, seven behind Northern Ireland and eight behind leaders Romania.

Brandur Hendriksson Olsen will be the main man looking to exploit Evans' lack of recent playing time, the 19-year-old attacking midfielder a key figure in the Faroes' unlikely rise in the last 12 months. The FC Copenhagen man may have just five caps to his name, but those five games have each been impressive and important ones for his team in their qualifying campaign. If the Faroes are to make it to the finals of their first ever major competition, then Hendriksson Olsen will play a significant role in helping them achieve this.

There was speculation before O'Neill announced his squad that Evans could be dropped due to him not playing regularly as of late, with Bradford City's Rory McArdle dubbed as a potential replacement. Nonetheless, O'Neill chose to stick with the former, and the Bantams will be relieved with the decision, given that their defence has endured much change over the summer and McArdle's presence is even more key in their side now as a result.

The Faroes, however, will target the centre of defence and, in particular, Jonny Evans as a weakness in the visiting side. Evans sealed a move to West Bromwich Albion from Manchester United earlier this week, with a lack of opportunities arising for him at Old Trafford so far this season. As a result, the centre-back is lacking proper match fitness and sharpness, though is expected to start for his country.

As for Northern Ireland, there are doubts regarding the fitness of star player Lafferty, adopted left-back Chris Brunt and midfielder Steven Davis, though all three are expected to be able to start the game tonight. Meanwhile, Jamie Ward will miss the match, with manager Michael O'Neill stating that the forward "has the least chance" of being able to play out of the four in question.

As if the Faroe Islands weren't going to struggle enough to contain the 27-year-old too, they will have do it without centre-back Atli Gregersen, who is suspended for tonight's match. Left-back Viljormur Davidsen is also absent, this time through injury, which does not help the cause either.

Thus, Lafferty comfortably leads the scoring charts in Group F, with his nearest competitors Riku Riski of Finland and Romanian duo Paul Papp and Bogdan Stancu - all with just two goals to their names, however. England's Danny Welbeck and Wales' Gareth Bale, both with six goals, and Poland's Robert Lewandowski, on seven, are the only players with more than Lafferty in this year's qualifying competition.

Since, the Norwich City striker has added to his tally with a goal in the 2-0 victory away to Greece, before bagging both goals, which came in the space of five first half minutes, in his country's 2-1 win at home to Finland in March.

This was the second of Lafferty's five goals in qualifying so far, with six games played, following an 88th minute winner in their opening encounter with Hungary in Budapest.

The reverse of this fixture was played in October of last year, with it just the second match of qualifying. Northern Ireland came out on top on that Saturday night, winning 2-0 at Windsor Park, Belfast, in front of 10,500 fans, thanks to first half strikes from Gareth McAuley and Kyle Lafferty.

With just four games remaining in the qualifying stage now for all teams, results are crucial if sides are to clinch a top two spot and automatic entry to next summer's competition, or at least a place in the play-offs with a third place finish - though the best third-placed team will progress automatically to the finals too.
