England's qualification for the European Championships in France next summer can be sealed this weekend, as Wayne Rooney looks to become his nation's all-time leading goal scorer against San Marino.

Rooney looking for goals in a routine fixture

The England and Manchester United captain is just one goal behind Sir Bobby Charlton's milestone of 49 goals for the Three Lions, and Rooney's form against San Marino suggests that he can overtake Charlton to become the leading English striker in history on Saturday.

It will come as a kind boost for Rooney, as his current club performances in the Premier League have come under scrutiny, with his dreadful displays meaning the Red Devils may opt to start new signing Anthony Martial instead of the England forward.

England will more than likely beat San Marino with complete ease too, as their previous results have been nothing but an untested affair, with the scores coming in with 5-0, 8-0, 5-0, 7-1 and 6-0 victories.

Standard line-up or run out for some of the squad members?

There's very little surprises in terms of Roy Hodgson's squad for the upcoming encounter, with Joe Hart likely to start in between the sticks, despite Jack Butland's scintillating start to the season as Stoke City's number one.

Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw have been two of the best full backs in the opening four Premier League games this season, both contributing to three clean sheets out of a possible four, while also possessing the attacking prowess which has brought about a number of chances created and assists.

With Leighton Baines injured and Kyle Walker and Glen Johnson not selected, there's very little competition in the full back position.

Chris Smalling has had a tremendous start to the season, showing real leadership qualities in a secure back four. Want-away defender John Stones may start alongside Smalling, but the out-of-sorts Gary Cahill would be the more obvious choice.

Jonjo Shelvey got a deserved call up to Hodgson's England squad too, along with Ryan Mason. Ross Barkley, Michael Carrick, Fabian Delph and James Milner make up the rest of the central midfield areas, with Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana notable absences through injury.

Raheem Sterling, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott will occupy the wide areas, leaving Rooney, Harry Kane, and Jamie Vardy as the options through the middle.

Kane backs Rooney to break record

The competition for the striking role is frightening, however, England`s managerial team may opt to play two strikers, to partner Kane, who netted 30 goals last term with Tottenham Hotspur, with Rooney, and the Londoner has spoken well about his potential striker partner and his own form too.

Kane believes that his captain "is in great shape" and hopes that "he can continue [to score goals] for England at the weekend." He is convinced that Rooney "has still got many more years to come" and therefore he also has "a great opportunity of getting quite a few more [goals]," which would be "great for the nation."

The youngster is confident that his national teammate "can break the England goal record on this trip," saying it "would be great" if he does.

As for his own form, which has seen him fail to score for Spurs so far in the new season, Kane said that "obviously [he] want[s] to be scoring" and he believes that the game against San Marino is not just "a good chance for [England] to get the three points," which he dubbed as the "most [important]" thing, but also "some goals as well."
