A Mario Götze brace and another from Thomas Müller rounded off a 3-1 victory for Germany over Poland in their Euro 2016 qualifier.

Müller opened the scoring in the 12th minute before Götze added a second, seven minutes later. Despite been two goals behind though, Poland were eager not to give in and managed to pull one back through Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski - ten minutes from the full-time whistle.

Götze, Mesut Özil and Mats Hummels all had good opportunities to get a third before Götze secured the win in the 81st minute.

Lively start

It was a lively beginning from the hosts with Müller and Bayer Leverkusen winger Karim Bellarabi each coming close within the first five minutes of the match. Real Madrid's central midfielder, Toni Kroos put a dangerous ball into the Bayern frontman - whose header was just too high of the target.

Müller then turned provider as he teed the ball up for Bellarabi, but his effort was narrowly wide of the left-hand post in the end.

Müller opens the scoring

Müller redeemed himself, having squandered his earlier opportunity. He then went onto open the scoring, having played a one-two with Jonas Hector before darting towards the byline and slotting the ball back across goal - into the path of the forward who had no problems slotting the ball past Swansea City goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.

Götze doubles up

Kamil Groscki went very close to getting an equaliser for Poland, but it was soon the home side that doubled their advantage.

World Cup hero Götze received the ball on the left-hand side and went on an incredible solo run weaving in and out of numerous Polish players, managing to go all the way into the area before unleashing an excellently-executed effort through the legs of the defender and past the hand of the diving Fabianski.

Lewandowski gets one back

Poland continued to push for a goal back with Grzegorz Krychowiak coming close but it was Lewandowski who managed to get one back ten minutes before the break.

They managed to break quickly from their German counterparts with Kamil Grosicki's through ball played into the Bayern striker, who put his header in the bottom right-hand corner beyond club team-mate Manuel Neuer.

Neuer gets vengeance

It was Neuer who had the last laugh though, as he produced a world-class save to deny Lewandowski from scoring once more. Arkadiusz Malik played a headed through ball to Lewandowski who had time to set himself up for the volley - which was straight down the middle of the goal but Neuer brilliantly palmed it over the crossbar.

Close opportunities

There were very fine margins in the beginning of the second period for both sides. Götze came close to his second when Ilkay Gundogan played it to the goal-scorer but his second effort on goal clattered off the post.

Krzysztof Maczynski also had a effort on-goal when he was set up by Lewandowski, but Neuer was quick to react and comfortably smothered the danger. Bastian Schweinsteiger was the next player to have a crack at goal but his effort was just too high of the mark.

Germany look for a third

Joachim Löw's side continued to push for their third goal of the match, Arsenal's creative midfielder Özil had his first opportunity of the match when he attempted to curl the ball into far corner but Fabianski was equal to the danger in the end.

Hummels was next after the Borussia Dortmund defender got his head to Kroos' inviting cross, but Fabianski was alert to keep the scores respectable and give his team-mates a chance to get themselves back into the game.

Götze rounds it off

After all the pressure placed on the Polish defence in the second period, they eventually crumbled once again nine minutes from the end. Götze was very much alive to the situation after a shot deflected of the legs of Fabianski and the creative midfielder - who was heavily linked with a move away from Bayern this summer - did brilliantly to stick a leg out and hit it into the corner of the net to give Germany some much-awaited breathing space in the encounter.
