Despite being pegged back twice, Germany eventually saw a brave Scotland side off 3-2 thanks to a Ilkay Gundogan winner, continuing their march towards Euro 2016 qualification.

Scrappy first half goal fest

Four of the five goals in the game came in the first half, with a fair bit of fortune for all of them. Germany got in front just shy of the 20 minute mark when Thomas Muller scored with the aid of a deflection. James McArthur made a poor mistake in the middle by trying to knick the ball off Muller, who then drove at the defence before striking left footed with the ball zipping into the bottom right corner off Russel Martin.

Scotland did not let their heads drop though and within 10 minutes they manged to pull themselves level, with a huge slice of luck for themselves. Shaun Maloney whipped in a low free kick from the left which bounced just in front of Manuel Neuer, who could only parry the ball straight out, where it then bounced off an oblivious Mats Hummels and into the net.

Parity lasted just six minutes though as Germany scored another somewhat scrappy goal with Muller again the benefactor. It was worked well from left to right as Mario Gotze was found in the box and he played it across to Emre Can who ran in unopposed to fire at goal with David Marshall only parrying the ball inside to Muller, who nodded it down and in off the right post with the ball just crossing the line.

Gordon Strachan's side refused to accept their fate though and equalised again before half time. Another set piece caught the Germans out as a corner from the left was only flicked away as far as McArthur on the edge of the box, who hit it first time on the half volley and saw the ball fly into the roof of the net despite Neuer getting a hand to it.

The decisive moment

Joachim Low clearly had some strong words for his players at half time as they put in a far more professional performance in the second half, and quickly got themselves back in front early in the period. A rather simply worked move as Gundogan played it into Muller down the right side of the box, who reversed back in the middle where Gundogan continued his run and passed the ball into the net via the right post.

Hosts run out of gas in the second half

The huge ask of Scotland's challenge simply got to them in the second half as they could not draw level for a third time and never really came closeas the 2014 World Cup winners finally got a grip on the game. The closest the Scots did come to a third goal was through right back Alan Hutton who played a one two with Steven Fletcher on the right side of the box but slid an effort high and just wide in the 66th minute.

Germany certainly had the chances to add some gloss to the result as they exposed a tired Scottish back line. Firstly Bastian Schweinsteiger had a powerful effort from the edge of the box beaten away by Marshall after Muller had won the ball high up the pitch.

Then with just a couple of minutes left Gotze should have sealed the points when after two one two's with Gundogan he was in the clear, but lifted the ball well over the bar with his right foot under no pressure from defence or goalkeeper.
