Bordeaux overcame their midweek cup disaster at Lille by thrashing Stade Rennais at the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux by four goals to nil.

The scoring was opened on 29 minutes when Cheick Diabate found a fortunate way to goal with a header. The goal tally was doubled for Diabate on 51 minutes when the scorer notched home from a scramble inside the box.

Diego Rolan got in on the action on 67 minutes when he swept up following a parried ball into his path. Finally, the scoring was finished in added time when substitute, Thomas Toure, squeezed a shot by Benoit Costil.

Hosts open scoring in first-half

Before the match, Rennes were sitting high in the Ligue 1 table but this was far from a comfortable position to be in with a whole host of clubs within just a few points of them. Bordeaux had a midweek shock when their run of 10 games undefeated came to an end when Lille ran out as 5-1 winners to reach the Coupe de la Ligue final.

Diabate scored the first goal of the match with a fortuitous header. Teenage attacker, Adam Ounas, placed a cross into the box for the scorer, who rose above the rest, and headed the ball down. Costil dived to it but managed to push the ball into the net.

Second half performance sealed victory

The second Bordeaux goal came in the second half and was another example of taking their chances when they fell. A lobbed ball into the 18-yard box couldn't fall to its intended target, Clement Chantome, but Diabate was alert to score from the scraps as he drilled into the bottom right.

Rennes did have the chance to spark the beginning of a comeback, but youngster Ousmane Dembele dallied too much on the ball before releasing deep into the box and his shot was blocked.

Dembele and Rennes were punished for not converting the chance when Bordeaux increased their lead to three goals. Ounas' powerful shot from the edge of the box was spilled by Costil. Subsequently, the save rolled into the path of Rolan who smashed in the follow-up.

Substitute, Toure, completed the scoring two minutes into added time. His left-footed effort from just outside the box beat Costil at his near post. The French 'keeper would have been disappointed in letting the shot go by him in the way that it did.

Rennes will try to get back to winning ways at home to Saint-Etienne on Thursday night while Bordeaux will try to make it two-in-a-row in the league away to Lyon on Wednesday.
