Despite good chances falling to the visitors, Olympique Lyonnais were held to a goal-less draw by their main rivals, Paris Saint-Germain. That was in no small part to Ann-Katrin Berger's heroics between the sticks.

Going into the game Lyon were top of the table by three points over league rivals PSG, who were posing a real threat to claiming their crown. It was a vital game for both teams, with netiher team dropping many points to the other teams in the league.

Due to Lyon's win in the reverse game earlier in the season, the pressure was mostly on PSG as they needed the win. OL were able to settle for a draw, though it was a game that neither could afford to lose.

An even opening

The first five minutes of the game was nervous from both sides. It saw both sides find no way through the opponent's defence with their possession-based play. First glimmer of a chance came courtesy of Laure Boulleau earning a free kick after a good surge down the left. However, the resulting free kick came to nothing.

Both teams struggled to find a rhythm at the start of the game and rather unusually for a Lyon side, they were trying to break down the PSG side with long balls behind the defence. The home back-line and Ann-Katrin Berger showed some good awareness and claimed the ball on several occasions.

After 10 minutes or so, Lyon started taking control of the game and earned themselves a few corners; Lotta Schelin was working remarkably hard to pressure the PSG defenders and cause corners. The first real chance came after a Lyon free-kick, which left Eugenie Le Sommer wide open at the back post, but she couldn’t quite connect with the ball.

Game was a bit sloppy, with many fouls given away. However, Louisa Necib and Cristiane were doing their best to entertain the crowds with some skillful displays. The game was slowly setting into the assumed pattern, with Lyon dominating but with PSG dangerous on the counter. The goalkeepers were largely untested.

Lyon begin to cause trouble

After 16 minutes, a corner for Lyon almost resulted in a goa. Le Sommer headed Necib’s set-piece in Ada Hegerberg's direction, but the Norwegian couldn't find the finish. The pressure was ramping up but the PSG defence remained relatively untested.

Not long later, Berger had to deliver. Amël Majri tried her luck from distance and the ball looked destined for the far corner, but an outstretched Berge, managed to push the ball onto the post.

Lyon, gaining more and more possession, were forcing their hosts into some desperate clearances but it would not go all their way. They caught Lyon out of balance on a counterattack as Sabrina Delannoy played it into the path of Anja Mittag, but the German forward couldn’t get the shot on goal.

The last 10 minutes of the game saw Lyon with the possession, but were rather sloppy with the final ball. They created a few chances, but none that troubled Berger.

Lyon still on top

Second half started very much the same as the first, with both teams struggling to get going. Lyon quickly took control of the game, however, with some good pressing and a few chances.

The first dangerous situation of the half came after 51 minutes. A cross from Majri, after some good work on the sideline, almost found Hegerberg at the back post. However, again the Norwegian was unable to apply the finish. PSG swiftly counterattacked, as they had for most of the game, but Cristiane’s final pass found no one and was dealt with by the Lyon defence.

It wasn't until the hour mark before the first meaningful opportunity came. After a perfectly delivered free kick by Necib, Schelin's effort was stopped by Berger. A world class save by the German 'keeper, who had a very good game.

Late drama

The game became a little chippy after this, with tackles and free kicks coming more frequent. One of those free kicks fell to Necib in a good position but she couldn't find the target. The final few minutes proved to be the most exciting as an Abily cross found a completely open Claire Lavogez, but she headed it straight at Berger.

A minute later, some good play between Mittag and Dahlkvist gave the Swede a massive chance, but she curled  her effort wide. Schelin and Mittag had late opportunities but spurned them, meaning it ended all square.

All in all it was a game which Lyon dominated, but where PSG were never far away. Berger had a splendid game, and saved her team on a number of occasions.
