Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich side were ruthless as they registered a comfortable victory over the hosts of the tournament, Borussia Mönchengladbach in a 60-minute match.

Gladbach fielded almost an entirely changed side from their match against Hamburg in the semifinals played the previous day.

There were chances on both ends early in the match but it was Bayern who capitalized on them. Franck Ribéry finished with a volley past Christofer Heimeroth after his run had been spotted by teammate Arjen Robben in the 17th minute of the match.

Minutes later, Bayern doubled their lead after a bad giveaway from Tony Jantschke on the edge of the box. Captain Phillip Lahm slotted home the rebound after Müller’s initial shot was saved.

The reigning Bundesliga champions showed no mercy. Thiago Alcântara chested in his first goal as a Bayern player to make it 3-0 before Gladbach even had a chance to recover from conceding the second.

The home team gave their fans something to cheer about when they won a penalty just before half time. Luuk de Jong converted after Diego Contento was shown a yellow for bringing down Patrick Herrmann in the box.

A similar pattern continued in the second half. Arjen Robben restored Bayern’s three-goal cushion, heading in after being set up by Ribéry in the 41st minute. Thomas Müller got the fifth just before the final whistle, finishing off a well-worked move.

The two sides will face each other again on the 9th of August in the Allianz Arena for the first Bundesliga match of the season.

Earlier in the day, Borussia Dortmund beat Hamburger SV 1-0 to claim 3rd place in the tournament.
