Werder Bremen and Eintracht Braunschweig played out a 0-0 draw at Weserstadion this afternoon.

Despite being embroiled in a relegation battle, it was the men in yellow who made the better start to the match and threatened the Bremen goal with a number of chances.

New signing Havard Nielsen, making his debut for the club, almost made his mark within eight minutes but his shot was deflected just over the crossbar. Nielsen then had a chance to head his new side in front but his effort was safely gathered by Bremen goalkeeper Raphael Wolf.

The hosts grew in confidence and began to cause the visitors problems, with Eljero Elia providing the main threat to the Braunschweig defence. Nils Petersen and Zlatko Junuzovic both had chances to fire the hosts into the lead but neither could find the target.

Bremen began the second half on top and had another chance to take the lead three minutes after the interval. The dangerous Elia played in Philipp Bargfrede, who thundered a shot off the post from 25 yards out.

Santiago Garcia then had an effort cleared off the line by Omar Elabdellaoui as the hosts piled on the pressure. Elia did find the net with an hour played, but the goal was ruled out for offside. Braunschweig then could have stolen the points minutes later, but Marc Pfitzner couldn't hit that target.

The result means that the hosts remain in eleventh place in the Bundesliga table, while Braunschweig are now two points adrift at the bottom.
