A seemingly difficult and improbable task has become somewhat impossible for Arsene Wenger's men after goals from Toni Kroos and Thomas Muller sealed a 2-0 away win for Bayern at the Emirates in their UEFA Champions League Last 16 tie.

Wenger surprised a few before kick off by opting to start his younger and inexperienced option up top in Yaya Sanogo ahead of Olivier Giroud and the atmosphere built as the minutes ticked by, heading towards kick off.

Bayern impressed from start to finish and the game was very much a replica of the previous evenings' meeting between Manchester City and Barcelona in terms of events unfolding and of course, scoreline.

The game started brilliantly, Kroos' long range effort saved by Szczesny whilst Sanogo's shot from slightly closer was pushed away by Neuer. Then, ultimately, the turning point.

Mesut Ozil's trickery was too much for Jerome Boateng to deal with and the German brought down his fellow countryman, though his very poor attempt was saved by Neuer. Had this been converted, the tie could have been very different indeed.

Shortly before half time, Arjen Robben was brought down by Woijech Szczesny and the Polish goalkeeper was shown the red card. Austrian full back David Alaba had the opportunity to put his side up with an away goal, however he too failed to score.

On 54 minutes, finally, deadlock broken. Santi Cazorla was given up for Fabianski to enter the field of play, leaving Arsenal that bit more vulnerable to being over-run and outclassed, and Toni Kroos swept in a glorious effort, straight past the substitute 'keeper.

And they were dealt an absolute killer blow with two minutes remaining, Thomas Muller heading home to double their advantage and only increase the complexity of the task that now lies ahead for Arsenal, though what they need to force extra time at the Allianz in a few weeks time is the exact result that they managed in last season's fixture in Germany. Difficult, but not over.

Eventually, the pressure told as substitute Thomas Muller headed in a late second goal to all but kill off the tie ahead of the return leg at the Allianz Arena next month - where Arsenal won 2-0 last season, but ultimately lost on away goals.
