After winning 1-0 away to Augsburg FC, 'Der Club' went into this clash confidently. FC Nürnberg were looking for a win to shed some light between them and the relegation zone.

Torsen Liberknecht's side went into this match after a vital 3-2 win in the bottom of the table clash - Hamburger SV. A win for Eintracht Braunschweig and a Hamburg loss would mean Brauschweig go off the bottom of the table.

Nurnberg had an early opportunity, costless kick was put into a dangerous area but no Nurnberg player could finish the chance.

Bottom side Braunschweig had their chances, Domi Kumbela attempt  was deflected which went out for a corner. Soon after Braunschweig had a costless kick but it ran through to Raphael Schäfer. Another chance for the Brauschweig Captain and key player Domi Kumbela but his shot went wide of Raphael Schäfer’s goal.

Nürnberg fought back after Braunschweig’s heavy pressure. Hiroshi Kiyotake forced a great save from Marjan Petkovic who was drafted in after the injury to regular goalkeeper Daniel Davari.

Braunschweig attacked the home sides defence again, a through ball was played, Per Nilsson was adjudged to have brought down the attacker which was deemed to have prevented a scoring opportunity. Resulting in a red card for the Nürenberg defender.

Corner for Braunschweig, Domi Kumbela was first to the header beating the defenders in the air, sending the bottom side Braunschweig into a 1:0 lead. Domi Kumbela scored his fourth goal in two games for Braunschweig.  Five minutes later a penalty was awarded to Braunschweig, Domi Kumbela beat goalkeeper Raphael Schäfer to the ball. Raphäel Shafer received a yellow card for his troubles despite his anguish towards the decision. However the Nürnberg shotstopper turned redeemed his actions by saving the resulting penalty from Domi Kumbela. The Braunschweig skipper missed the chance to grab his fifth goal in two games and give his side a vital lead in the fight to beat the drop.

At half time, the score was FC Nürnberg 0:1 Eintracht Braunschweig. Nürnberg finished the first a half a man light. Braunschweig thought they should have been 2-0 up but Domi Kumbela’s spot kick was saved by.Raphael Schäfer.

When the second half resumed, Gertjan Verbeek’s side looked a different team that finished the first half. Straight from the kick off a long ball was flicked on to Nürnberg danger man Hiroshi Kiyotane’s shot was too powerful for Marjan Petrovic. Two minutes into the second half, Nurenberg piled on even more pressure, half time substitute Tomas Pekhart was played through one-on-one and made it 2-1 10 man Nurnberg. Domi Kumebla’s missed penalty coming back to haunt them. 

Looking for a way back into the game, Braunschweig right back Benjamin Kessel powered down the wing promisingly but inform Raphael Schafer pulled off a great save, yet another chance to get a second was squandered.

Nürnberg had a chance to add to their lead when a long throw was nodded on but Ondrej Petrak’s header was comfortable for Marjan Petkovic.

At the other end Braunschweig had good chances to equalise, Havard Nielsen’s header flew over the bar.  In the sixty-second minute Braunschweig awared their second penalty of the game. But for the second time in the match the captain Raphael Schäfer was the hero saving from the spot from Ermin Bicakcic

Nurnberg put pressure on the bottom sides defence, looking for the crucial third goal, with the attack looking promising Braunschweig defender Ken Reichel gave away a penalty, the third in this match. Nurnberg had the chance to put the game out of Braunschweig’s reach Hiroshi Kiyotake missed a golden opportunity to put the game to bed. Another great save from the penalty spot from the stand in goalkeeper. Pekhart had a chance from a corner but his header went way wide.

In desperation Eintracht Braunschweig created as many opportunities as they could, Domi Kumbela tried making up for his penalty miss but his attempt was wasted. Numerous time having crosses cleared and shot blocked

The ten-men of Nürnberg took the game to Braunschweig in the second half and their clinical finishing fired them to a 2-1 victory at home.

Missed opportunites Braunschweig’s downfall missing 2 penalties and numerous chances to draw level and take the lead.

The three points for FC Nürnberg meant that they went two points ahead of Eintracht Frankfurt and Werder Bremen and just one point behind Hannover 96 in the eleventh, even though they have a game in hand on ‘Der Club’.

However with this loss for Eintracht Braunschweig and the shock win for Hamburger SV, meant ‘Die Löwen’ slumped back to the bottom of the Bundesliga.
