The club from Lower Saxony returned to the Bundesliga this season after a 28-year absence. In that spell they played as low as 3.Liga and were close to playing in the newly formed Regionalliga.

Lieberknecht took charge in 2008 and got Braunschweig promoted back to the 2. Bundesliga in the 2010/11 season, before achieving a mid-table finish and getting promoted the season after.

No one gave Braunschweig a chance from matchday one and they were always favourites for the drop. Their first win came on matchday eight against VfL Wolfsburg, only for them to win two more games in the first-half of the season, which came against Bayer Leverkusen and Hoffenheim respectively.

Goalkeeper Daniel Davari announced today that he will part company with the club come the end of the season, whether they get relegated or not. The goalkeeper will be a huge miss for Braunschweig next season, as he has made a total of 87 appearances since his move from Mainz in 2009, and has been ever-present since matchday eight this season when he forced his way in to the team.

Dominick Kumbela has also hit form at the right time this season. The DR Congo forward has played an integral part since coming on against Hamburger SV and scoring a hat-trick, previously he had only scored two goals all season - he now sits on nine.

The question on The Lions' fans lips however is can they actually do it and pull off a miracle? It looks af is the answer to that question is yes.

Five matches left in the season and they are only one point behind Nürnberg who lay in 17th. Whilst being only two points behind Hamburg in 16th who are level on points with VfB Stuttgart who occupy 15th. Two of those five matches come at home against champions Bayern München and Bavarian side FC Augsburg who have, against all odds, been the underdogs for the 2013/14 season.

Braunschweig face SC Freiburg this weekend at the Mage Solar Stadion and The Lions go in to that game following a 3-0 win over arch rivals Hannover 96 which surely will be a morale booster.

Håvard Nielson, on loan from Red Bull Salzburg scored the second goal in the 3-0 win over Hannover. Speaking to Bundesliga.com he said: "It was a brilliant day for us and I was really happy with my performance."

The 20-year old added: "We're in a really good vein of form and we hope to keep it going."

Before the end of the season they will also travel to capital city Berlin to face Hertha BSC who are not in the best of form at the moment having not won in eight games, whilst it seems Adrian Ramos' goals have somewhat dried up.While their final game will be against costless-scoring Hoffenheim on the final day of the season. If they want to get anything out of this game then they will need to keep both Roberto Firmino and Kevin Volland quiet.

Braunschweig's away form has not been the best this season, in-fact they have not won away in the winter break which is a worry. Although you do feel that they could get something out of their remaining away fixtures.

They will have more chance of winning their away fixtures than their home fixtures for the rest of the season. Realistically the Lions need to ideally win two of their three away fixtures to stand any real chance of staying up.

For Braunschweig to stay up, they need unity, passion and heart, and there is no denying that the have the three of those. The fans have that sense of belief and there is a general feeling around the club that they can pull the great escape off. However, have they hit form too late? We'll know come May 10th.
