Bremen travelled to strugglers Freiburg which opened the 26th matchday of this seasons Bundesliga. Freiburg Increase Survival Chances

Bremen left it late in their previous game to grab a draw against Stuttgart, with a win tonight would see them climb to tenth. For hosts Freiburg, a resounding 4-1 victory away at Frankfurt last week would surely spur on Streich's men this evening - as his side could climb as high as 14th.

Visitors Werder got the game underway shooting left. Hosts Freiburg would start off the game t. brightly in the opening minutes and would continue to dominate throughout. Felix Klaus went down and the decision to award Freiburg with the costless kick was met with much controversy as later replays show Klaus dived. The resulting costless kick was to be wasted by Frenchman Schmid who failed to clear the wall with his early effort.

The deadlock was broken by Freiburg skipper Julian Schuster, who ever so spectacularly volleyed home after Bremen failed to clear adequately enough from Guede's powerful run into the box. With a quarter of an hour gone and the hosts were leading the result meant they were out of the drop zone area. Bremen survive a scare shortly after when they failed to clear first time after another run from aforementioned Freiburg man Karim Guede, who again tanked into the box but fell over when about to pull the trigger.

One of the first real chances for Bremen came from an Obraniak costless kick which was gained by the aerial clashing of Klaus and Werder man Caldirola. Obraniak's costless kick was played in perhaps too deep for any man in a green shirt to get a touch and 23 year old shot stopper Oliver Baumann gathered comfortably. Bremen's next real chance came from a fast break engineered by long serving Aaron Hunt. However the break would also be broken down by said individual as he over-hit a cross into the box where Di Santo could be found. Freiburg looked promising right the way throughout the first half and looked like they would add another at some point in time. The closest they came to adding another came late on when Guede seen his goal bound shot blocked emphatically by Caldirola who spared Ignjovski of blushes after he hashed his lines granting the ball to Guede. The last opportunity of the half fell to Ex-Wigan man Franco Di Santo who hit the side netting after attempting what could only be described as attempting the near enough impossible because of the rushed shot on the turn at an awkward angle.

Half time: Freiburg 1-0 Bremen - Schuster only goal that separates sides in West Germany in a half dominated mainly by the hosts.

Freiburg got the game underway again after the break. Baumann, almost completely untested during the first forty-five was called into action early on as a costless kick delivered deep almost caught him out. As expected Freiburg added to their tally for the night, Felix Klaus smashed in his second goal in two games while under pressure from the Werder defence, after Mehmedi beat Ignjovski to cut the ball back to him. Beautifully sculpted attack starting from the defence followed by a stupendous pass to assister Mehmedi from Darida. Freiburg found themselves two up just shortly after the restart.

A not too dissimilar chance happened only minutes later when Mehmedi again beat Ignjovski and cut back to try find a red shirt in the box. Bremen man Bargfrede dealt with the ball accordingly. This time the Bremen defence were unable to keep the ball out of the net as a stroke of luck allowed Mehmedi through on goal and dispatch the ball past Wolf. The On-Loan Dinamo Kyiv man had all but surely secured the win for Freiburg on a night Werder lacked in the final third. Mehmedi's capitalised on Klaus' blocked effort to slot the ball past Wolf.

Aaron Hunt unselfishly laid off second half sub Nils Petersen to tap into an empty net and reduce the deficit to only two with twenty minutes remaining; the result of a rare calamity from Ginter. Werder almost grabbed another as there was some confusion between the Freiburg centre-back pairing allowing Petersen to go through on goal. Fortunately for Ginter and Krmas the bounce favoured Baumann and he caught the ball saving both of them from embarrassment. There were two minutes added on at the end but there was very little in the way of goalmouth action.

Full time: Freiburg 3-1 Werder Bremen. Freiburg are clear of the drop zone at least overnight and make that two wins on the trot. Bremen drop to 12th and the defeat signalled the end of a 5 match streak without a loss.
