Mainz continued a fantastic season and touched within three points of Wolfsburg in the fourth and final Champions League spot after a 3-0 home win over Werder Bremen, a game which was won before half time thanks to an own goal from Nils Petersen, plus two more from Christoph Moritz and Yunus Malli.

The comfortable home win at the Coface Arena left away side Bremen twelth in the Bundesliga rankings with four games to go, seven points off Nurnberg in seventeenth.

Mainz took the lead early on after five minutes, Petersen failed to clear the danger and diverted the ball, quite remarkably, into his own net off of the Mainz corner.

Their second came ten minutes later, when the ball ricocheted off Sebastian Prodl before falling to Moritz who slammed home past a helpless Raphael Wolf, and their third was converted by Malli shortly before half time, placing the ball wonderfully into the top corner and to the keeper's near post.

The second half brought little with the game seemingly already won, Malli missed the chance to make it four after hitting the post. Whilst Eljero Elia had Bremen's best chance, but the Dutchman put it to waste.
