The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with both Manchester United and Real Madrid and rumours have been circulating that Barcelona were eager to send club officials to negotiate with Dortmund and their midfielder. But despite interest from all three clubs, the Bundesliga star has signed a contract extension with Borussia Dortmund keeping him at the club until 2016, quashing all rumours linking him away from the club.

Gundogan has been suffering from spondylolisthesis but he insists the injury which has kept him on the sidelines this season and will keep him out of the World Cup this summer will not stop him from continuing his career.

He joined then Champions Dortmund from Nuremberg in 2011 and has been one of their best players since, scoring against Bayern Munich when Dortmund reached the Champions League final last year.

Gundogan said: "I am very grateful that my club has given me the opportunity to remain part of this very special team and club environment. I will do everything I can to be able to help my team-mates again as soon as possible and am very optimistic going into the coming weeks and months."
