The hosts fell 1-0 down to a Patrick Herrmann goal but two goals from Admir Mehmedi, a cracking strike from Oliver Sorg and a goal from record-signing Vladimir Darida kept 3 points in Freiburg. Gladbach had cut the deficit to two when Harvard Nordtveit struck in the 89th minute.

Gladbach had started the game looking to progress on 4th spot as their hunt for Champions League football was starting to fade as the season draws to a close. It all started well when they scored in the 9th minute. Juan Arango, who scraped Gladbach a draw last weekend, picked out a very well placed pass into the feet of Patrick Herrmann and the attacker slotted home from 12 yards.

Freiburg responded well and didn't give Gladbach a moments rest. Their offensive line was pushing further and further making the Gladbach defense work harder and harder. They lacked the final strike and Gladbach were coping well. Gladbach came close to a second when Raffael came within inches of finding the net but was crowded out after rounding the 'keeper. It would of put daylight between the two sides, but they were made to pay for their missed chances

Jonathan Schmid came on and announced himself on the stage within minutes, as he struck a fierce shot and tested Ter Stegen. He then turned provider, when he put the ball into Freiburg's top scorer Mehmedi's path, the Swiss' shot clipped Tony Jantschke and looped over the Germany Under-21 goalkeeper for the equaliser.

But the game changed, in a moment, after 63 minutes. Raffael was tripped by Christian Gunter and Filip Daems saw his penalty kick saved by Baumann. It all started to fall apart for Gladbach, after that as Granit Xhaka was sent off for a second bookable offence midway through the half. In the 70th minute Sorg smashed an incredible 35-yard strike, into the top corner, to send Freiburg ahead for the first time in the game.

Less than a minute later Freiburg found a third from another quick break, Felix Klaus passing inside to Darida who squeezed the ball past the oncoming Ter Stegen. Mehmedi made it a brace for the afternoon, dribbling round the helpless Gladbach goalkeeper and slotting home despite the best efforts of Jantschke.

The three points were safe - and perhaps their Bundesliga status was too - even in spite of Norwegian midfielder Nordtveit scoring a late consolation.
