As the Bundesliga season enters it's climax, the race for the top four has taken centre stage after Bayern Munich sealed the title in record-setting time. Borussia Dortmund and Schalke continue to slug it out for second spot, and in their battle have opened up a handy buffer over the trailing trio of Bayer Leverkusen, VfL Wolfsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach. The prize of finishing fourth, of course, is the chance to take part in the UEFA Champions League, along with all the financial gain and prestige that goes along with it.

Granted, Leverkusen remain in prime position after their comfortable win over FC Nürnberg, but The Wolves have well and truly started giving chase. Wolfsburg currently have all the momentum going for them after a superb recent run of results in the League. Combined with the recent loss in form that Gladbach have experienced and Leverkusen's torrid Rückrunde thusfar, one might not be very unwise in betting on Die Wölfe to secure the prized European spot on offer.

Manager Dieter Hecking has done a fine job in instilling a new-found resillience into his charges, which have enabled them to grind out results when previous incarnations of the side would perhaps not achieved. Hecking's technical nous has been apparent in his approach to games in which he has preached a more attacking style of football with the considerable riches in terms of personnel that he has at his disposal.

The emergence of young Maximillian Arnold as a key first-team player has been one of the main posetives in the season, with his creativity, eye for a pass and finishing instinct distinguishing the 19-year-old German from his peers. In fact, the role that this exciting youngster has taken for Die Wölfe even relegated the club's former star, Diego, to the substitutes bench or out wide instead of in his favoured 'number 10' role. This, of course, contributed greatly to the departure of the Brazilian from the club in the January transfer window in search of pastures anew. Enter Kevin de Bruyne.

The young Belgian star had a torrid time at Chelsea, finding first-team opportunities increasingly difficult to come by in London. Then, after a long transfer saga, De Bruyne finally joined Wolfsburg in what has turned out to be a match made in heaven. The youngster was afforded the keys to Hecking's attack, freedom to be the heart and soul of Die Wölfe, to which he duly obliged. De Bruyne already has become the chief creator of chances for Wolfsburg, picking up a truly astounding number of assists in his short time at the club. True, he hasn't really found his scoring boots yet, but his hunger, desire and enthusiasm has galvanised the entire squad for that final push to the end of the season.

Another player who has impressed immensely has been the irrepressible veteran Ivica Olic. Approaching 35 years of age, one would have forgiven the Croatian for not chasing every single ball forward, pressing every single defensive player in defense and showing a never-ending hunger for goals. However, that is the nature of Olic, and that is precisely why he is love by the fans. He is a terrier, determined to give his all every single time he dons the green shirt until the very end. This fighting spirit and dogged determination has had an affect on the rest of the side, and one can clearly see the veteran's influence, particularly on the younger players.

Upcoming matches against SC Freiburg, VfB Stuttgart and then a potentially season defining clash with Borussia Mönchengladbach will close out the Bundesliga season for Die Wolfe, and even though Luiz Gustavo and Junior Malanda are injury concerns, there is a quiet confidence around the Volkswagen-Arena that Wolfsburg have what it takes to secure fourth spot.

However, the old saying goes that it isn't over until the fat lady sings.

Or, more aptly, it isn't over until the Wolves howl.
