In the earlier Group B game, Serbia and Ukraine drew 1-1. This meant a win for either team would see the victorious side go top of the group.

Inside a minute Davie Selke opened the scoring with a brilliant right-footed volley from the edge of the box, following a Benjamin Trümner cross. The Hoffenheim man drove down the right, after beating the offside trap, then cut-back for the Bremen striker to guide the ball home.

Bulgaria tried to respond immediately. With some good build-up play, Kiril Despodov was slipped through but his shot dragged wide. Kolev had a shot from the edge of the box, Oliver Schnitzler could only parry the ball away after some violent movement on the shot. Trümner cut inside onto his left foot, but his shot only forced Lyubenov into an easy save. Germany then capitalised on some lax Bulgarian marking to make it 2-0. Anthony Syhre was costless at the back post from a Niklas Stark flick-on and calmly finished first time to double Germany's lead on twenty-eight minutes. Dudziak cut inside from the right, his left footed shot curled over the bar. Before half time, Bulgaria pressured Germany, with Kolev’s shot from outside the box sailed over the bar.

The teams went in at half time Bulgaria 0-2 Germany. Bulgaria created chances but they were unable to test Schnitzler.

Davie Selke grabbed his second goal, following great play from Marc Stendera whom broke down the right. After being played onside by Bulgaria's sweeper 'system', Stendera cut it back to Mukhtar who stabbed it into Selke's feet and he finished with aplomb, leaving the keeper no chance. Then, Mukhtar cut inside on his right but he scuffed his shot, it was an easy save for Lyubenov. Trümner cut inside on his left foot but skied his shot. Great play from Bulgaria, Despodov had a shot with his right foot but he had too much and his shot whizzed over the bar. Bulgaria had chances to pull goals from DespodovVutov and Vitanov but all their chances were poorly executed and not challenging SchnitzlerGermany had their chances to humiliate Bulgaria with shots from Mukhtar, Lohkemper and Syhre.
