There is an agreement in place between Hamburg and Nicolai Müller of 1. FSV Mainz 05 over the proposed move, according to Sky Germany.

The clubs are yet to agree on a fee for the German international, who has made two caps for Die Mannschaft.

Müller, 26, started 22 matches for Mainz last season, helping the team in to sixth place and a route in to the Europa League.

The 26-year old has one-year left remaining on his contract with the Rhine club and a move North to Hamburg is looking all the more likely.

Mainz are expected to receive a fee of around €4-5 million for the fan favourite after sporting director Christian Heidel had confirmed they were in contact with HSV.

Müller was born just 120k East of Mainz, in a town called Lohr am Main. The forward played football at an early stage in Eintracht Frankfurt's youth team. He then played in the Bayernliga for three years with Greuther Fürth II before moving up to their first team.

Whilst at Fürth, Müller was loaned out to SV Sandhausen where he played 18 games, scoring five goals in his time there, before he returned to his parent club.

Müller helped Fürth to their promotion to the Bundesliga in the 2011-12 season, before joining Mainz for €1.7 million.

He made his debut for Mainz in August 2011, coming on as a last minute substitute against Hannover 96, replacing Eric Choupo-Moting. Müller's first start game against Borussia Dortmund just three game later, where he also scored his first Bundesliga goal.

The forward has enjoyed his time at the COFACE Arena, appearing 70 times for Die Nullfünfer, finding the back of the net on 20 occasions.

Müller will provide HSV with pace and a direct style of football. Also noticed for his defensive contributions, Müller can play on either wing, or as a main striker to provide HSV's new signing, Pierre-Michel Lasogga some competition. This is something that Hamburg weren't able to do in their previous season.

The hole left by Müller will be a bitter one for Mainz' fans. With Choupo-Moting and Shawn Parker having departed the club. New manager, Kasper Hjulmand will turn his attention to new loan signing, Filip Đuričić to provide the team with goalscoring opportunities.
