Jorge Benitez was expected to join Bundesliga outfit Borussia Mönchengladbach from Club Guarani of Paraguay with Gladbach set to pay €3 million for his services but today, Sporting director Max Eberl has said the deal fell through.

Eberl told media: "Benitez is not coming. The overall package was not right."

It appears that Benitez excessive wage demands were the stumbling block in the transfer.

Benitez travelled to Germany this past weekend to undergo a medical. Fellow Bundesliga sides Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen were allegedly after his services alongside Mönchengladbach. Whether Dortmund and Bremen will follow up their interest now remains uncertain.

With the deal falling through it still leaves Gladbach with just one established first team striker after the departures of Luuk De Jong and Peniel Mlapa respectively and still severely lacking in firepower.

The recently capped national teamer would have been Borussia's sixth signing overall this summer following in the footsteps of Fabian Johnson and co.
