The evening Friday game once again saw Fortuna Düsseldorf in action, last weekend they kicked off the new season with a 2-2 draw against Eintracht Braunschweig. Union Berlin also started their season with a draw, the game between themselves and Karlsruher finished without any goals.

Tonight's action saw a first half full of end to end action and it was Union Berlin that provided the first key chance of the game. Sören Brandy broke down the right and delivered a great low cross to find Steven Skrzybski, his close range effort was kept out by the left foot of Michael Rensing. Fortuna responded with a great team move which saw Heinrich Schmidtgal burst forward from left back before luckily playing a one-two with a defender, his scuffed shot found Erwin Hoffer who was able to finish into the bottom corner. Unfortunately for all involved with Düsseldorf the goal was ruled out, Hoffer was just offside.

Union Berlin came close to taking the lead thanks to a large slice of luck, Adam Bodzek's clearance was charged down by Brandy and almost crept in past Rensing. The Düsseldorf shot stopper was able to get down low to deny Brandy the fortunate goal. Last week Michael Liendl scored a fantastic goal to open the scoring for Düsseldorf and he almost did the same in this game. The Austrian tried his luck from range, but could only look it curl just over the bar.

Düsseldorf took the lead in the 35th minute, Schmidtgal played a low cross into the box and an unmarked Charlison Benschop could only knock the ball away from Sergio Pinto, fortunately Liendl was arriving around the back and the Austrian finished brilliantly to make it 0-1, that's two goals in two for the midfielder.

Just before the break Benschop bared down on goal, but his effort was matched by Daniel Haas and it was a comfortable saved.

Half Time: Union Berlin 0-1 Fortuna Düsseldorf.

The second half belonged to the home side, it must've been a great teamtalk at the break as Union Berlin played some of their best football in quite some time. The hosts came very close to levelling things after some fantastic footwork from Benjamin Kohler saw him beat two defenders before setting the ball off to Björn Jopek, his effort from the edge of the area forced a great save out of Rensing.

Just after the hour mark Union were finally level, Barış Ozbek whipped in a lovely corner, Brandy flicked it on and Damir Kreilach was able to lose his marker and volley in from close range. Union's tails were up and they continued the pressure, a long ball found Skrzybski and after breaking into the box he could only fire high and wide. Berlin were finding success with their crosses and set pieces, with twelve minutes remaining Christopher Trimmel managed to win a header at a corner, however he could only look his header flash wide.

Union continued to threaten and were looking the most likely to grab a winning. This wasn't to be and as the game ticked into injury time Sergio Pinto stepped up to take a costless-kick just outside the Union Berlin area, it was a terrific attempt and unfortunately for Fortuna the effort was kept out by the crossbar, Bodzek was first to the rebound but he could only head over.

Both sides are still yet to get a win under their belts but the positive is that they've managed to avoid defeat on both outings. Next week Union Berlin travel to face Bochum for Monday's fixture and Fortuna Düsseldorf host Karlsruher on Saturday.

Full Time: Union Berlin 1-1 Fortuna Düsseldorf.
