The Bundesliga started back up again with a bang, as there were six goals split evenly between the two teams on Friday evening. As both sides come away with a deserved point after a very exciting match.
The start of the match was a little poor as both sides were trying to shake off rustyness from the two week break as there were not many opportunities between both sides. Elia gave Werder Bremen the first decent look on goal after four minutes as his shot curled up and over the goal, but it never troubled Leno. The home side started getting into the match after the tenth minute of play as they started flying down both flanks, causing Bremen some difficulties getting back and were a bit disorganized.
Gonzalo Castro had Leverkusen's had the best chance early on in the eleventh minute as his shot slammed off the left post. Six minutes later the hosts broke the deadlock through 18 year old Tin Jedvaj, on loan from AS Roma. The young Croatian right back was found all alone on the right from Stefan Kiessling and his swerving shot avoided Raphael Wolf to give Leverkusen the 1-0 lead.
Leverkusen nearly found a second goal just a few minutes later as Wolf's save fell to Kiessling but the striker's shot was hit straight at the Werder Bremen goalkeeper. Fin Bartles found space behind Leverkusen's back four but Bernd Leno came racing off of his line to disrupt the winger and forced a bad shot from Bartels as a result. Werder Bremen would level the match right before the break as Bartels placed his effort underneath a diving Leno after he was found on the left as Leverkusen's defense was pushed towards the right side.
The second half was as exciting, if not more, than the first half as there would be four more goals and chance after chance. Werder Bremen took the 2-1 lead just after the hour mark as it was almost a carbon copy of their first goal, but this time it was Franco Di Santo who tucked it into the goal. But Bremen's lead did not last very long.
20-year-old sensation Hakan Calhanoglu scored off of a sensational costless kick just three minutes later. His shot looped over the jumping Bremen wall as it fell back down to the top left corner as there was absolutely nothing Wolf could do about it. Ten minutes later, Leverkusen took the lead back with about 17 minutes left on the clock as they hit Werder Bremen on the break as Heung-Min Son recieved the ball on the right, cut back and fired his shot from 25 yards out.
However, with just five minutes left to go in the match Werder Bremen leveled the match once again after some terrible defending from the hosts. Di Santo crossed the ball from the right as it fell to Sebastian Prodl (yes, that's correct) and he made no mistake as he rocketed his shot behind Leno.
