VfB Stuttgart has dismissed icon and former player, Fredi Bobic from his board role as director of sports at the club, just hours before they play Borussia Dortmund.

Joachim Schmidt, chairman of the club’s supervisory board told the club’s official website: “In the current situation we don’t see any possibility of making a positive, sustainable improvement.

“The fact is; after four years it has not been possible to put a team together that achieves a position in the league that matches our budget.”

Schmidt admitted that Bobic: “had put up with some opposing forces,” during his time at the club.

The 42-year old had been under pressure for a number of weeks following the Bundesliga club’s poor start to the season, which saw them pick up just one point from 12.

Bobic was appointed the role of overseeing the sporting direction of the club in 2010, having previously played nearly 150 games for Stuttgart.
