Half of the teams that were in the draw are previous winners of the Germany's second biggest prize on offer. Record Champions, Bayern Munich, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Werder Bremen, Borussia Dortmund, Kickers Offenbach, 1. FC Köln, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and last but not least Bayer Leverkusen. The most recent winners of the competition are Bayern Munich who are then followed by Borussia Dortmund and then Werder Bremen.

Tournament top scorer Sven Schipplock will have the opportunity to add to his already six strong tally after his side, Hoffenheim very convincingly progressed into the third round .
