Last time out Schalke tasted their fourth defeat of the season at Leverkusen's BayArena. Whereas Augsburg were 2-0 home victors over SC Freiburg. Schalke could propel themselves into the top sixth with a 2-0 victory and stay there at least overnight. Augsburg, who went into the game in eighth place a solitary point ahead of Schalke could climb no higher than sixth themselves.

Schalke kicked off and had one of the worst starts imaginable as midfielder Julian Draxler pulled up and was forced to leave the pitch as a result of his early misfortune.

Augsburg came out of the blocks fast and we're all over Schalke in the first ten. Baba sent one towards an unmarked Esswein at the far post but the German - who's last goal at club level came at the Veltins arena - blasted his volley high and wide.

it took almost fifteen minutes for any other goal action to surface and viewers were left thinking they were being tricked rather than treated on Halloween night. The shot was again in favour of the visitors. Schalke were simply passengers and lagging behind.

Kohr eased past Choupo-Moting in the box but was unable to find the target with his effort as it cannoned off Höger before it got close to the goal.

Schalke took the lead rather undeservedly on the counter with little over five minutes to go through Huntelaar. The Dutchman was faced with the easy task of passing in an Uchida cut back and did so in style as he battered it home.

A minute later Huntelaar chested down Meyer's cross to Obasi who was able to sting the gloves of Augsburg shot stopper, Hitz with a vicious volley from outside the area.

Obasi smashed it into the side netting in the first ten of the second half where Schalke already looked a better side than the one that played the first forty-five.

Altintop had to snatch at Bobadilla's cross and despite getting a good enough connection the Schalke born-Turk was unable to guide it past Fährmann.

Thommy's ambitious effort had Fährmann sprawling across goal before it went the other side of the post. Werner swung one into the box not long after but Matavz wasn't able to connect.

Werner was at it again not long after as he wriggled away from his marker but man of the match Uchida put in an all important tackle to deny Werner almost surely tying the sides level.

Obasi fought his way past two Augsburg defenders before unleashing a fierce shot which Hitz was equal too.

Matavz almost rescued Augsburg a very well deserved point but his shot went ever so narrowly wide of the mark.

The referee called time on the game following three minutes stoppage time. The visiting Bavarians will leave Gelsenkirchen feeling like they deserved at least a point  in a fixture that they really turned up for. Schalke are now above Augsburg following the victory by two points.
