Union Berlin started with real intensity and scored in the first minute, a lapse in concentration by Dennis Kemp let Björn Jopek break through, he then squared to Christopher Quiring who crashed home past Dirk Orlishausen. The hosts continued to dominate the opening exchanges and nearly scored a second. Steven Skrzybski cut in from the left-wing put was unlucky as he hit the post.

The last chance of the first half went to Karlsruher, some nice build up play on the edge of the box finished up with Rouwen Hennings receiving the ball but he couldn't get it out his feet and Berlin managed to clear the ball.

The first chance of the second half fell to Union Berlin, Christopher Quiring ran through but was at an obscure angle when he shot, as it was easily saved by Dirk Orlishausen. Union Berlin then grabbed their second of the game, Christopher Trimmel whipped in a wonderful cross and it was finished off by a diving header from Sebastian Polter.

The last chance of the game was a similar chance to Berlin's second goal but it went to Karlsruher. The ball was crossed in and was met by Hiroki Yamada but it was saved by Daniel Haas.
