Andreas Köpke, who won the 1996 European Championship, has been in touch with the recently dropped BVB goalkeeper and expects him to be back in goal after Christmas.

The former Nürnberg, Eintracht Frankfurt and Marseille stopper has personally given the Dortmund goalkeeper his backing, "I have been in touch with Roman and gave him some words of encouragement. But I have little doubt about it that he will return to the starting XI after the winter break."

"The entire situation in Dortmund is obviously quite difficult." Köpke told German newspaper BILD. "They are trying everything they can to get back on track. This time it has affected Roman. That's of course quite bitter for him. It's not about individual interests at Dortmund at the moment."

As Köpke eluded to, all Weidenfeller wants is for his club to return to form, "The only thing that matters for them is to get back on track. They have to get back on their feet and leave the relegation zone."

Dortmund face Wolfsburg on Wednesday night, in their penultimate game of 2014. The Westphalians are currently sitting in sixteenth place, with fourteen points from fifteen games.
