Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Martin Stranzl has extended his contract with the club until 2016.

The Austrian centre-half had his contract up at the end of the season, but has added another year onto that and sporting director Max Eberl was extremely happy about his decision, "Martin is a mainstay in our team. We’re delighted that we’ve been able to tie him down for another year."

At 34 years old, physically condition could prove to be a centre-back's downfall in such a competitive league, but Stranzl's thirteen years of experience in Germany will stand him in good stead. "When the club came to me and asked if I could picture staying here for another year, there wasn’t much for me to deliberate," commented Stranzl, who had no second thoughts about an extension.

He continued, "I still feel very much at home here at Borussia, and have always stressed my desire to stay for as long as my body keeps up and the club continues to put their faith in me. I’m therefore delighted to be able to play for Gladbach for another year."

The Foals are currently in fourth position after a solid Hinrunde campaign, setting themselves up nicely to push towards a top-three finish.
