Mainz 05 goalkeeper Loris Karius has signed an extension with the Carnival Club, taking him through until 2018.

Karius, 21, has been an ever-present for his side this season and has pulled off a string of very impressive saves, most notably the several saves to keep a clean sheet against Bayer Leverkusen.

This form has earned him a call-up from the German under-21 side and, as a result, attracted interest from top European sides such as Benfica.

His contract was due to run out this summer and the decision for him to extend will come as a massive relief to all connected with the club.

Speaking to kicker, Karius had this to say. "It was not an easy decision for me, but in the end it was definitely the right one and a decision of the heart.

"For me it is a commitment to the club and our fans. After three years, I know what I have at Mainz. I look forward to the next few years here in Mainz."
