Leonard Stolz, formerly of 1860 Munich, has signed for Major League Soccer side New York Red Bulls.

This is his first professional contract for the Munich-born midfielder, who recently picked up College Footballer of the Year.

New York Red Bulls, who recently sacked coach Mike Petke, were the team that signed up Stolz and were very happy to do so.

“Many thought that Leo was the best player in the Draft,” said the Red Bulls' sporting director Ali Cirtus.

“We’re excited to be able to welcome a player like him to our organisation. We’re confident that Leo will be able to reach his potential with us.”

The right-footed 23-year-old moved to George Mason University in 2011, before transferring on to University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) a year later.

He went on to captain that side who reached their first College Championship final in December, but lost out to Virginia on penalties.
