Jakub Błaszczykowski scored a late equaliser from the spot after Joel Pohjanpalo gave the hosts the lead earlier in the half. As already mentioned the main talking point of the game was Ilkay Gündogan's injury which will almost certainly rule out a January transfer for the player if that was a possibility.
It hasn’t been the greatest of winter breaks for Borussia Dortmund. Having come into it off of their worst ever Hinrunde in their history they were hoping to regroup and recharge ahead of a hopefully better second half of the Rückrunde. Their first game was against Sion of Switzerland and it was hardly a convincing victory with youngster Jon Stankovič grabbing the winner in the 58th minute.
The next game was at home to Romanian side Steaua Bucureşti and again it finished 1-0 to Die Schwarzgelben as Jakub Błaszczykowski scored in the 84th to give his side the win. However Dortmund suffered yet another injury blow as Sebastian Kehl suffered a shoulder injury that will keep him out for up to four weeks.
One positive of the break has been new signing Kevin Kampl. The 24-year old was signed from RB Salzburg for £7.92 million and he certainly made an impact against FC Utrecht, he scored his first goal for the club in the 17th minute to give Dortmund the 1-0 win.
Dortmund actually went behind in today’s game after Joel Pohjanpalo gave the home side the lead after Charlison Benschop pulled Roman Weidenfeller off his line before sliding it across to Pohjanpalo. Before that goal Ilkay Gündogan was forced off with a suspected hamstring injury which BVB Director, Michael Zorc, later confirmed to the press.
Ciro Immobile seemed to have scored in the 65th minute after Oliver Kirch put him through but his effort struck the post much to the relief of the Düsseldorf players. Axel Bellinghausen then had an effort inside the area that originally looked like he had dragged it wide but replays showed that it was actually a superb save from Weidenfeller.
Immobile then nearly scored again as he rounded Lars Unnerstall after a Nuri Şahin through ball but his effort was blocked by Dustin Bomheuer on the line although he was ruled offside earlier in the move. They did eventually make the breakthrough thanks to Düsseldorf defender Jonathan Tah. The young German brought down Błaszczykowski inside the penalty area. Błaszczykowski took it himself and scored.
