FC Augsburg have secured versatile defender Christoph Janker on a free transfer from Hertha Berlin.

Janker has signed a deal with die Fuggerstädter until 2016, just a few days after Marcel de Jong had his contract terminated by mutual consent.

The former 1860 youngster becomes Augsburg's third winter signing, with Pierre Emile Højbjerg and Ji Dong-Won joining earlier in the window.

"We have covered many positions with one player," Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl rejoiced: "He can even defend on the left, although he is right footed."

Sporting director Stefan Reuter shared his coach's positivity, "He will fit in the team seamlessly with his experience."

He's managed over fifty games between stints at Hoffenheim and Hertha, but has failed to make the 18-man matchday squad this season.

It's understandable then, that Janker is eager to get started with FCA: "I look forward to the new challenge in FCA. They have a great team and have enjoyed some strong development in recent years, which I now also want to contribute to."
