Schalke 04 defender Felipe Santana has joined Olympiakos Piraus until the end of the season.

The centre-back made his way to Greece on Friday 30th January, before completing a medical and signing a contract with the current Greek League leaders until 30th June 2015.

Santana's contract runs until 2016 with the Royal Blues, having joining from Ruhr rivals Borussia Dortmund in summer 2013.

First team opportunities have been limited for the experienced Brazilian, making just four appearances in the Bundesliga. Along with that, he's featured once Schalke's Champions League campaign and in the DFB-Pokal exit to Dynamo Dresden.

The loan will afford him some much needed game time, although it is slightly surprising he's left given the lack of centre-backs at the club.

Manager Roberto di Matteo's three-at-the-back formation has required defensive midfielders to play in the defence.

Santana's departure leaves five remaining centre-backs, but with Kaan Ayhan and Joel Matip injured it means that new signing Matija Nastastic will need to hit the ground running.
