Hamburger SV have announced the signing of Chilean midfielder Marcelo Diaz for an undisclosed fee.

Diaz will sign a two-and-a-half year deal with HSV, taking him through until 2017. He arrives from FC Basel having made 13 appearances for the Swiss champions this season.

He began his career with Universidad de Chile, before going on loan to La Serena. The 20-time national team player then moved to Basel in 2012/13 and has been an important part in their run to two Europa League semi-finals.

Speaking to 'HSV total!', Diaz was extremely pleased that the move had gone through: "The stadium is one of the most beautiful in the world. And the Bundesliga is, in my eyes, currently the strongest league in the world. That's why I was very happy when Peter Knäbel called me and told me that the transfer would work."

He also kept positive about HSV's current situation, with the team currently in 16th, "I am very happy to be here and will help to keep keep us in the Bundesliga. I sure that this will happen."

Diaz could make his debut on Wednesday evening, when Hamburg travel to SC Paderborn hoping to bounce back from a 0-2 defeat to FC Köln.
