Benfica midfielder Filip Djuricic has cut his loan deal from Mainz to join Ronald Koeman’s Southampton side on loan for the rest of the season.

In a statement realised on the official Mainz website, it read: “Filip Djuricic’s wish has been granted; he has moved to the English Premier League. The attacker, who was on loan at Mainz from Benfica and made 11 Bundesliga appearances for the club, had his loan deal terminated before joining Southampton on loan. An agreement was reached between Christian Heidel, 1. FSV Mainz’s sporting director, Southampton and Benfica.”

Ronald Koeman was keen to bring in an additional midfielder to Southampton this January, with Feyenoord’s Tonny Vilhena being the number 1 target for the former Feynoord manager, however Feyenoord ruled out any move of Vilhena leaving the club after a £5 million bid from the Saints was rejected.

Djuricic is a very versatile midfielder, being able to as a forward, attacking and central midfielder and the Serbian can even play as a left winger. Injuries have hindered the Saint’s chances of Champions League football and the loan signing of Djuricic could be pivotal in the coming weeks for Southampton.
