It was a balanced first ten minutes, Stanislav Sestak’s header the best chance of the opening minutes, his header flew onto the roof of Manuel Riemann’s net.

Then Union Berlin had numerous chances within two minutes, first Bjorn Kopplin missed his initial attempt but controlled the ball at the same time; at the second time of asking his effort deflected over the bar. Few moments later, Steven Skrzybski met another corner from Christopher Trimmel though his effort sailed over.

Half an hour in the deadlock was finally broken by Selim Gündüz, a short corner from Bochum was played to the end of the box and Gündüz brilliantly placed his effort to make it 1-0. The 21-year old scored his first goal of the season.

Six minutes after the deadlock was broken, hosts Union Berlin almost levelled. Trimmel’ corner was flicked on at the front post to Damir Kreilach but his head sailed over, a chance that really should’ve levelled the game. A few minutes before the break, Felix Bastens cynically brought down Trimmel in a dangerous free kick area, Kreilach’s free kick brilliantly saved by Michael Esser.

Michael Weiner brought the half to a close; visitors VfL Bochum went in at the break, leading against Union Berlin.

The second half resumed, brilliant one touch, free flowing football from Bochum very nearly resulted in a 2-0 lead but Piotr Cwielong fired wide.

Five minutes after the restart, Union Berlin equalised Martin Kobylanski finished off spectacularly rounding off a brilliant move from the hosts.

After the goal, Union Berlin were fired up creating some heart stopping chances for the Bochum fans, Esser was tested on two different occasions, long shots from Steven Skrzybski and Kobylanski forced the Bochum keeper into saves.

Throughout the second half it was fiercely competed in the middle of the field where little chances were created but showed off the two sides power.

With just under five minutes to go in the game, Union Berlin made it 2-1. Kobylanski chipped it through to the skipper Damir Kreilach and he slotted under the oncoming Michael Esser.

With just seconds remaining, Bochum had the chance to steal a point, Marco Terrazino’s delivery fell to the feet of Mikael Forssell who scuffed his shot wide.

Full time whistle blew and Union Berlin came back from the dead to beat Bochum 2-1 sending them up to eighth and Bochum stay in eleventh.
