After a 3-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund, the last news that SC Freiburg wanted to hear was that of an injury to striker Nils Petersen.

The on-loan Werder Bremen striker picked up the injury during the first half of Saturday's loss and was taken off for Dani Schahin during the interval.

Their worst fears were confirmed on Monday, as an MRI scan at Freiburg's University Hospital confirmed that he had partially torn knee ligaments.

It is a massive blow for the club, with Admir Mehmedi out with ankle ligament problems and Philipp Zulechner is on loan at Austria Wien.

That leaves Schahin and Karim Guede as the remaining strikers, who only have one goal between themselves all season.

Petersen took to life in southern Germany like a duck to water; the former Bayern striker netted a hat-trick on his debut against Eintracht Frankfurt. Only Vladimir Darida (6) has more goals than Petersen, for Freiburg, this season.
