Bayern started the game brightly when Robben found Schweinsteiger roaming inside the penalty box, but the Bayern vice-captain’s volley went inches wide of the post in the opening minute. Muller came close to opening the scoring in the 10th minute when he slipped through the Shakhtar defence through a Robben pass, his shot beat the keeper but Kucher was there to clear the ball off the line. The first half after that was very quite for Bayern Munich’s standards, Munich had chances from Muller and Robben but Pyatov did well to decline their efforts. Costa and Adriano could had given Shakhtar a shock lead had it not been from some good defending from Rafinha and Boateng. Robben had a great chance towards the end of the opening half when Alonso’s well worked free-kick found the Holland international but the winger scuffed the shot and the ball flew out for a goal kick.

The only highlight off the second half happened in the 66th minute when Xabi Alonso brought down Costa who was through on goal and Alonso received his second yellow card of the night to take Bayern Munich down to 10 men. Lewandowski was added to Bayern Munich’s incredible attacking roster but even the former Borussia Dortmund striker failed to make any impact on getting Bayern that vital away goal.

Bayern enjoyed the majority of the possession in the second half as you would expect from Pep Guardiola’s men, but during the entire match Bayern could only manage one shot on target, which came in the first minute through Thomas Muller. Shakhtar must now travel to the Allianz Arena knowing that Bayern will be putting up a ruthless fight in order for them to progress to the quarter-finals. The last time Bayern were eliminated from the round of 16 was in 2011 when the Bavarian giants lost to Inter Milan 3-3 on the away goals rule.
