Werder Bremen have prematurely extended the contract of right-sided player Theodor Gebre Selassie until 2018.

It caps off a recent bout of good news for the northerners, who have won every game since the Bundesliga came back from it's winter break.

Gebre Selassie's deal was set to run out in 2016 but as a regular in the side since his arrival from Slovan Liberec, after a very good showing at EURO 2012, he was handed the early extension.

"Theo is a very important player for us and an exceptional person who also enjoys the greatest confidence within the team," said sporting director Thomas Eichin. "We are delighted to continue to still be working with Theo for a long time."

The 27-time Czech Republic international also spoke about his new contract, "Since the first day in Bremen and at Werder I felt great. The last few months have shown that we have undergone some good development."

He added: "I look forward to continuing to be a part of the team and together, with the fans and everyone here, to continue on this path."

Fellow defender Janek Sternberg also signed a new deal at the club, tying him down until 2017, though the main man they want to commit is star-man Zlatko Junuzovic.

The Austrian midfielder has been central to Bremen's success this year and his set-piece ability has had clubs around Europe swooning over him.
